The ASSKARS: Best #Justice4AlexNieto Film Nominees!

It’s the Oscars today!

We would like to thank the filmmakers who documented the story of Alex Nieto, our cause, and our movement FOR TWO YEARS!

Unfortunately, none of our community filmmakers were nominated at #OscarsSoWhite. 😦

But don’t worry! The Justice & Love for Alex Nieto Coalition also has a member named Oscar, aka AssKar Zalinass! To honor our community filmmakers, and in honor of one of our most solid gold members, we have put together a list of nominees for our very own ASSKARS...!

Our nominees for an ASSKAR are…

<drumroll please>

Uncle Ray Balberan for documenting the Justice4AlexNieto movement (2014-ongoing)

Peter Menchini for The Death of Alex Nieto (2014)

Rafael Flores for Amor por Alex (2014)

Ivonne Iriondo and Adriana Camarena for The Twilight of Alex Nieto (2014)

Ben Bac Sierra with filmmaker Peter Menchini for Lowrider Lawyers: Putting A City on Trial

We love our Oscar, aka Asskar Zalinass! Even though he might be chasing down Coalition member Adriana Camarena right now. We really really love him!

p.s. Did our list miss a film? Let us know at and we’ll include you! YOU WON AN ASSKAR!

“Amor por Alex” Rally song!

Sing along with 1,000 of us at the “Trial: Alex Nieto versus the SFPD” on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. at the federal courthouse in San Francisco! Our rally song: “Amor por Alex” to the tune of the original farm workers’ anthem “De Colores”!

Invented on the streets of San Fran: Mayor Roberto Hernandez mentioned “De Colores” as an example of inspiration. Ben Bac Sierra started singing “Amor por Alex” to the “De Colores” tune. Then he called Francisco Herrera to compose a song. Francisco recruited Miguel Govea with the accordion—and the product we now gift to you! Practice singing along with the actual lyrics below. On the day of the trial rally, we will pass out copies and our unified singing voice will touch the heart of justice! Note that in the background is Bernal Heights, where Alex Nieto was killed by the San Francisco Police Department—yet Alex Nieto LIVES!

Join us for action and love at the Alex Nieto Trial rally on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. at the federal courthouse in San Francisco! Click the link to join the Facebook event page.

To the Tune of De Colores /
Con la música de De Colores

Amor Por Alex
For our brother
Who gave of his life
So we’d love one another
Amor por Alex
Has us working and marching
And singing to bring about justice
Amor Por Alex
Is the reason
We’re Ending the violence
Right now and for good
This is why we are NOW organizing
A city that’s rising
For justice and peace (2x)

Amor Por Alex
For a brother of curious nature
Who loved education
Amor por Alex
Nos unió con amor para el pueblo
Vida y esperanza
Amor por Alex
makes us ride our low riders
and bikes and walk through the streets
That is why we are now organizing
A city that’s rising
For justice and peace (2x)

Amor Por Alex
We’re creating a Project
where people have power
And freedom
Amor por Alex
Cantamos y bailamos
Al ritmo Tod@s:
“Si Se Puede”
Amor por Alex
We are more than those
Who try to scare us
And silence our hearts
Y por eso nos organizamos
Y el mundo cambiamos
Como él lo soño (2x)

Amor por Alex
Que sufrio una gran injusticia
Junto con Amilcar
Amor por Alex
Que nos hace trabajar mas duro
Por la dignidad
Amor por Alex
hace que nuestra vida florezca
en comunidad
Y por eso nos organizamos
Y el mundo cambiamos
Como él lo soño (2x)

RALLY! The Trial: Alex Nieto vs SFPD, starts March 1st, 2016 @ 8am!

For the past two years we have been community building for this rare event: The Trial: Alex Nieto versus The SFPD.

The time for history is now.

IRideWNietos Poster Final_001 smllrWe invite you to an unprecedented action of love: Join us for a massive community rally on TUESDAY, MARCH 1, 2016 AT 8:00 A.M., the morning that the federal trial for Alex Nieto begins. We will rally, share love, sing songs, make speeches, and show unbreakable unity at the United States federal courthouse in San Francisco’s Civic Center at 450 Golden Gate Avenue.

Shot at 48 times and killed by the San Francisco Police Department, Alex Nieto was a family provider, college student, security guard, and a positive, peaceful community activist. Implementing Mahatma Gandhi’s TRUTH FORCE, we will use our limitless creativity and the court system to action for our integrity, humanity, and rights, the most basic of rights—our lives! We will no longer accept fear, degradation, and murder.

Together we hold honor, action courageously, live consciously, believe in faith, and prove love. On TUESDAY, MARCH 1, we will chant in unity to enforce the United States Constitution—due process, equal protection, no unlawful takings. Years from now, you will be able to proclaim to your children and grandchildren that you were a positive part of the 21st century civil rights movement against police brutality and killings! So be there early, call in sick, walk out—SACRIFICE—because throughout the trial, we will make certain that justice prevails. We rally in power to enforce that which is beyond any constitution: AMOR FOR ALEX!

Prayer, speeches, poetry, and performances by Aztec danzantes, Alex’s Buddhist SGI group, Roberto Hernandez, Juana Tello, The Last 3% Coalition, Thea Matthews, SF Board of Supervisor John Avalos, Adriana Camarena, SF Poet Laureate Alejandro Murguia, Ben Bac Sierra, SF Board of Supervisors District Nine Candidate Edwin Lindo, Favi Estrella, Francisco Herrera, Equipto, Dregs One, Tony Robles, Father Richard Leslie Smith, AFT 2121 representatives, HOMEY, United Playaz y más!
